Master the complete spectrum of power—from patient preparation to decisive action. Through three decades of mastery across Eastern and Western disciplines, discover how to cultivate both the yielding softness that sets up victory and the explosive force that claims it.

The Way of Cultivated Power

Aggressive energy is the vital force within us all—often misunderstood, frequently suppressed, and rarely cultivated with intention. When left untrained, this energy becomes sloppy and self-destructive, turning inward to create tension, anxiety, and conflict. True mastery requires understanding both yin and yang aspects of power.

"The most devastating warriors appear softest until the moment of decisive action. Yang provides the strike; yin provides the setup. Mastery lies not in choosing between them, but in weaving them into seamless, strategic power."

— Professor Spencer Gee

Professor Spencer Gee grew up in a tradition of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, interpreting tai chi through the lens of the Five Elements and yin-yang theory. He guides students to master both the yielding receptivity that draws opponents into vulnerability and the explosive decisiveness that capitalizes on opportunity—integrating these complementary forces in body, martial practice, and daily strategic thinking.

Journey & Mastery

Born in San Francisco on May 9, 1960, to a Chinese-American physician who helped bring acupuncture to the West Coast, my path began with a foundation in alternative healing. My father's practice of deep tissue massage and acupuncture shaped my early understanding of holistic wellness, leading me to seek physical excellence through martial arts—valued more highly than medicine in Chinese culture.

After earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from the University of Southern California with a concentration in Motor Growth and Developmental Learning, I began my lifelong journey across multiple martial and creative disciplines. Each art form revealed another facet of human movement and the cultivation of internal power.

Today, as an Adjunct Professor at Hofstra University teaching Tai Chi Chuan and Martial Arts (2007–present), and through my practice at Functional Fitness in Roslyn, New York, I work with everyone from corporate executives to individuals managing neurological conditions, integrating my SABRE philosophy—Strike A Balance to Renew Energy.

"When an organization masters both the patient preparation of yin and the decisive action of yang, it becomes unstoppable. They yield strategically to draw out competitor weaknesses, then strike with devastating precision when the moment is perfect."

Five Elements in Practice

🌍

Earth Element

Absorptive dominance that draws attacks into emptiness, then responds with mountain-like inevitability. Earth teaches strategic stillness—appearing passive while setting the conditions for opponent's defeat.

Draw out opponent's strategies by appearing unmovable

Absorb organizational chaos while secretly repositioning for advantage

Let criticism exhaust itself against your centered presence

Project unshakeable confidence that forces others to overextend

🌱

Wood Element

Systematic expansion balanced by tactical withdrawal. Wood teaches patient growth and strategic retreat—sometimes withdrawing to deeper roots in order to advance more effectively when conditions are optimal.

Expand systematically while maintaining strategic escape routes

Use apparent setbacks to consolidate position for stronger growth

Build influence through calculated advance and strategic pause

Execute long-term vision by advancing when strong, yielding when wise

💧

Water Element

Patient predatory force that appears yielding while systematically undermining opposition. Water teaches aggressive timing—persistent erosion that appears gentle until the dam collapses.

Navigate complex negotiations with patient undermining of opposition

Appear accommodating while systematically removing competitor advantages

Build influence through consistent pressure disguised as cooperation

Find weaknesses through patient observation, then exploit decisively

Metal Element

Surgical precision balanced by strategic restraint. Metal teaches when to cut and when to withdraw the blade—knowing that the most devastating strikes come from patient observation of exactly where to pierce.

Study problems thoroughly before making the single decisive cut

Withhold judgment while gathering intelligence, then act with surgical precision

Eliminate inefficiencies through careful analysis and strategic timing

Use silence and restraint to draw out truth, then respond with clarity

🔥

Fire Element

Strategic explosiveness balanced by calculated restraint. Fire teaches when to gather energy in stillness and when to release with devastating effect—like a controlled burn that clears the path to victory.

Gather intelligence quietly before striking decisively

Allow crises to mature, then intervene at the perfect moment

Build internal pressure while appearing calm, then release strategically

Create breakthrough innovations through patient preparation and sudden execution

Practical Applications

Strategic Influence

Navigate professional relationships with elemental intelligence. Water teaches patient undermining disguised as cooperation, fire shows when to withhold energy and when to release it devastatingly, earth draws out opponent strategies through apparent passivity, metal uses strategic silence to gather intelligence, and wood builds influence through calculated advance and retreat.

Personal Mastery

Develop sophisticated self-management through elemental understanding. Water teaches patient persistence disguised as accommodation, fire shows how to gather internal energy before decisive action, earth provides the absorptive strength to draw attacks into emptiness, metal develops precision through strategic restraint, and wood grows through tactical flexibility—advancing when strong, yielding when wise.

Executive Performance

Integrate elemental principles into leadership practice. Flow like water to undermine opposition systematically, gather energy like fire before explosive intervention, absorb attacks like earth while positioning for counter-strike, withdraw like metal to study before surgical precision, and grow like wood through strategic advance and tactical retreat.

The Practice

What to Expect

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation where we explore your physical history, emotional landscape, and spiritual aspirations. Every student's path is unique—whether you're a Fortune 500 executive seeking mental clarity or someone managing chronic pain, your program will be tailored to your specific needs.

Sessions blend multiple disciplines seamlessly. You might begin with Tai Chi's flowing movements to center your energy, transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu principles for grounding, and conclude with Flamenco footwork to ignite your inner fire. This integration creates a practice that is both challenging and deeply nourishing.

Training Environment

Our studio at Functional Fitness in Roslyn provides a focused environment for transformation. The space features traditional wooden floors, natural lighting, and carefully curated elements from each martial tradition—a wing chun dummy from Hong Kong, capoeira berimbaus from Salvador, and meditation cushions from Kyoto.

Private sessions allow for deep, focused work on your personal goals. Small group classes (maximum 6 students) foster community while maintaining individual attention. For executives and those with specific health conditions, we also offer discrete in-home or office sessions throughout the New York area.
